My Experiment

I have selected to calculate 1g of Copper Carbonate for my experiment. It must produce enough gas so that there is some to measure and it must be less than the Measuring Cylinder’s maximum value which is 250cm3.

Equation 1: 2CuCO3 (s) = Cu2O (s) + 2CO2 (G) + ½ O2 (g)
Mole Ration: 2 : 1 : 2 : ½.

Firstly, I must work out the moles for Copper Carbonate.

Moles = Mass ÷ Mr

1 ÷ 123.5 = 0.00809 moles

There is a 1: 1 Mole Ration between Copper Carbonate and Carbon Dioxide. So to find the Volume of CO2 gas produced, I must use the same moles of Copper Carbonate for Carbon Dioxide.


Volume = Mass x 24,000


0.00809 x 24,000 = 194.3cm3

I must now find out the Volume of Oxygen gas produced. As there is a 4:1 ratio of Oxygen to Copper Carbonate, I must divide the moles by 4.
