Some Americans have felt that the Americans’ involvement in the Vietnam War was born out of necessity and their cause for war is justified. The Americans were determined to ensure that Vietnam would not fall under Communist domination. Although Vietnam was only a small part of the area geographically, Vietnam to them was most crucial. The Americans saw the threat to the Vietnamese people in the long run, a threat to the Free World community, and ultimately a threat to the Americans too. Thus, the US policy towards Vietnam under Eisenhower was “to maintain and support a friendly and non-Communist government in Vietnam and to assist it in diminishing and ultimately eradicating Communist subversion and influence.” The Americans feared that the “Domino Theory” would become real if Vietnam was to fall to Communism. This would reduce the American’s control of Indochina as Vietnam’s neighbouring countries like Laos, Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaya and Singapore might fall under the hands of Communists. Thus, American’s involvement in Vietnam was seen as absolutely necessary, just like the Middle East conflict, the Korean War and Cuba where the American felt it was necessary to contain Communism and prevent the spread of Communist subversion as highlighted by NSC68.

However, some Americans have disagreed that American’s involvement in the affairs of Vietnam were necessary or justified. Robert S. McNamara, US Secretary of Defence felt that “Southeast Asia is vital to the security of the United States, but the application of military force alone will not automatically defeat the Communists unless there is internal economic and social reform.”
